I could never fully articulate why I'm such a fan of her films--I think your "aesthetically pleasing ennui" captures it perfectly/succinctly. Also, her lesser-known Somewhere likewise embodies "trapped somewhere that sounds more glamorous than it really is." Maybe that's why it's titled Somewhere (groan, sorry.)
This is great. I think of Georgia O’keeffe painting the Pedernal 26 times or something. The viewer is different each time (I think) so their view is a little different.
I really love this! Thank you for sharing. I feel like I finally have some words for why I love her films but also to describe my own obsessions in my writing
“Or the refraction of them all together” - beautiful. I agree, it seems we are sometimes called to certain themes, spiraling around and in toward the center.
So much Sofia-worthy phrasing here. I especially liked: “loneliness that looks like luxury”
Aaaaand the worst thing about Substack (no editors) strikes again. Sorry for misspelling your name, Sofia, I fixed it!!

This was such an affirming reflection!
I love this take on her and her films!

I heard Eliot Smith once said that all his songs were ways to write something as beautiful as Because from The Beatles.
