Fully agree with every word. Reminds me of a line in Alexis M. Smith's GLACIERS, "The ferry from Seattle was crowded with other families, not Alaskan families but the kind of loose-minded travelers who pointed and photographed without really seeing."
Yes and yes and yes. Thank you for articulating this.
PS. What really grosses me out are the people who flounce up to a painting, *turn their backs to it,* pose for the selfie, and immediately race off to collect their next status trophy as empty as when they arrived.
Thank you for writing this! It's been disappointing and infuriating to see so many people in my writing community (both locally and internationally) coming out enthusiastically in favour of AI, with seemingly zero regard for the affect it has on others, especially marginalized writers. I'm grateful that you're taking a stand on this. I hope it inspires other writers to do the same.
I am instinctively against AI as a writing tool but have never put the time into formulating an argument about why that is. Thank you for doing the thinking and writing! I particularly love the unapologetic voice.
It's nice to see there are still sensible people out there. This perfectly encapsulates the feeling I first had a decade ago, watching people walk around the Louvre with selfie-sticks. The dystopian sensation never really subsided.
Yes. A billion times, yes. The hard work is the point, and what gets us all to the hard truths. Bravo for saying what I’ve been feeling throughout this AI-crazed time. Solidarity!
Mmmm, THIS is the piece I've been wanting to read about the intersection of art and AI. I'll be sharing this everywhere.
Thank you!
Thank you, Lilly, for putting my utter disgust with AI into beautiful words.

"loose-minded" is a great way to say it!
I need to share this with my freshman comp students.
I was thinking the same exact thing!
I would be honored!

Ugh yes, I saw a ton of that—and girls posing while their boyfriends took pictures of them.... like sorry sweetheart, but Venus you ain't

Thank you for the power of your voice and the truth you speak to all of us and for all of us. I can’t thank you enough. Truly.
YESSSSSSSSSS so much to this. Absolutely spot-on.
Perfect. Subscribed!

Thank you for this.
EVERY WORD OF THIS
Amen! This is so righteous and badass, I loved every single brain-produced word! Upgrading to paid!
Thank you!

Excellent piece. I am equally angry about AI and encountered something similar when I saw Guernica in person last year. Will definitely be sharing!
